Such a tiny place. Such a HUGE example for humanity !
Iceland is the oldest living democracy, having been established as a council-driven society in 930 CE. However, this idea can be challenged by considering the age of Islamic balance of power between Khalifa, the Imams, the Shura, and the establishment of bureaucracies in the Islamic world. One of the earliest forms of direct democracy is Athens, Greece.
Iceland has a market economy with relatively low taxes compared to other OECD countries. It maintains a Nordic social welfare system that provides universal health care and tertiary education for its citizens. Iceland ranks highly in economic, political and social stability and equality. In 2013, it was ranked as the
13th most-developed country in the world by the United Nations’ Human Development Index. Iceland runs almost completely on renewable energy. Affected by the ongoingworldwide financial crisis, the nation’s entire banking system systemically failed in October 2008, leading to a severe depression, substantial political unrest, the Icesave dispute, and the institution ofcapital controls. Many bankers were jailed and the economy has made a significant recovery, in large part due to a surge in tourism. [from Wikipedia]
An example of Icelandic democracy: on April 3rd, 2016, news organizations around the world first released the PANAMA PAPERS. On April 5th, Iceland had deposed their Prime Minister amidst suspicions of financial corruption ! That is a rapid response compared to the US, in which financial corruption is the norm and has actually ruled for over 50 years.
